Apps In A Flash (With Not A Lot of Ca$h)
There is a demand for our mobile computing environment to include real-time interactions with enterprise data. Field workers must have the ability to view and edit existing data. Management needs the ability to make decisions based upon immediate service needs. In the face of current budgetary and personnel constraints, City of High Point Geographic Information Services is using an unconventional approach to provide these services by utilizing existing technologies and in-house personnel. Items such as laptops, GPS units, .NET web-services, and Flash technologies are being pulled together to connect what is happening in the field to supervisors in the office. Customer Service and Public Safety personnel are already benefiting from this approach and helping to provide the platform for future development.

Customer Service: Do you really want “them” to come back?
Excellent customer service helps a business remain profitable, which is something that can be applied to the public sector. This will be a discussion on how customer service affects your bottom line, providing you with some tools, tricks of the trade and exchange of ideas on how to offer the best customer service your department is able to provide. There are four “cardinal” rules that go along with providing excellent customer service.
- Empathy – walking in that customer’s shoes
- Simple Acts – unwarranted acts of kindness speaks volumes
- Exceeding your customers’ expectations – practice active listening
- Leave them satisfied – wow that customer
In these economic times our customers are being solicited from all areas to have their technical needs met outside of the department. Excellent customer service is the foundation that will keep “them” coming back.

Preparing Your Organization For Change
Often, it seems that the only constant we have in government, is the need to change and do more with less. We live in an information-based society, under constant bombardment from new technologies, new business concepts and the mantra of doing more with less. How you react and respond to these forces as an organization ultimately determines whether your department will grow or follow and remain static.
Security: Physical & Logical Solutions
Installed in 1997, the security system at the NC League of Municipalities’s downtown Raleigh headquarters was rapidly reaching its end of life. The availability of parts repair or replacement was diminishing, cards were hard to come by as well as expensive, and the ability to find a company to provide service was near impossible. Cameras, intrusion detection, CCTV, and ID badging were all requirements. The new access control system offered ID badging, as well as CCTV and intrusion integration and from within a software application, the League can issue and maintain employee badges, pull video directly from alarm reports eliminating the need to search for video, utilize graphical maps for camera location and call up, and even run reports and bypass or enable alarms zones (contacts, motion detectors, etc.). This session will focus on physical and logical building security and issues that many in the IT industry must manage.

During this roundtable session, participants will share how they are using SharePoint in their own organizations, as well as the opportunities and challenges they have encountered in implementing and/or migrating to the new SharePoint 2010 environment. Come prepared to ask questions, discuss and share your success stories!"
